Kent Council Announces Successful Sale of Judi Dench-Backed Theatre
In a recent development, Kent County Council has revealed that a buyer has been found for the Broadstairs Memorial Hall, despite the property failing to reach its auction price. The hall, initially listed with a guide price of £350,000, received a single bid of £45,000 below the asking price.
The Sarah Thorne Theatre, which has a five-year peppercorn lease at the hall, was previously warned by Dame Judi Dench, its patron, that a sale would jeopardize the theatre's future. The council, however, remains optimistic, stating that the sale has been secured but cannot disclose the purchaser's identity as the transaction is not yet complete.
Brian Collins, the council's deputy leader, expressed his hope that the new owner will ensure the facility's success. He added that the council had explored all viable options, including proposals from alternative community operators, but none were submitted before the auction.
The council justified the sale as a necessary step due to the challenging financial circumstances. However, some have questioned the decision, including East Thanet MP Polly Billington, who suggested that the council reconsider its approach.
Michael Wheatley-Ward, the founder and director of Sarah Thorne Theatre, previously proposed moving the theatre to a charitable trust, allowing the company to continue operating the site. The theatre's patrons, including Julian Fellowes, Gyles Brandreth, and Sir David Suchet, have not yet commented on the sale.
