The golf world is buzzing! Cameron Smith, the Australian golf sensation, has made a definitive statement: he's staying put with LIV Golf, despite the PGA Tour's recent olive branch. This decision comes in the wake of Brooks Koepka's return to the PGA Tour, creating a ripple effect throughout the sport.
Smith, speaking from LIV Golf's media week in Florida, confirmed he wouldn't be following Koepka's lead. He stated, "I’m going to stay, mate. I’ve made a decision to come here and I’m standing by it." He also expressed excitement for the upcoming year, anticipating a strong performance from his team.
This news is particularly significant because the PGA Tour recently announced a 'Returning Members Program,' offering reinstatement to players like Smith, along with Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm, who had previously joined LIV Golf. The PGA Tour set a deadline of February 2 for these players to apply for reinstatement.
Smith's decision, however, seems resolute. When asked if he was tempted by the PGA Tour's offer, he responded with a firm "No." He added, "I’ve made my bed and I’m going to sleep in it. I feel like I’m in a really good place in my career and my life, family life, and I don’t need to change it."
But here's where it gets controversial... While Smith's stance is clear, the situation with other players remains uncertain. Reports suggest that Jon Rahm has no plans to leave LIV, and Bryson DeChambeau has playfully engaged with the dilemma on social media, even asking his followers for their opinions. DeChambeau's comments in an interview with Today's Golfer added further intrigue, hinting at ongoing discussions and the need for the situation to "make sense for both sides."
Smith, while not divulging his colleagues' intentions, hinted that he expects them to stay. He mentioned, "I think we have it pretty good out here and I’ve made my decision. I can only assume that there's will be very similar." He also expressed disappointment at Koepka's departure, acknowledging his star power while emphasizing LIV's strength. He said that in 2026 they are going to have the best field.
Smith's Ripper GC teammates, Marc Leishman and Lucas Herbert, also addressed the situation. Leishman highlighted the positive environment within LIV Golf, stating that he has "smiled more in the last four years than I have in quite a few years before that." He emphasized his lack of surprise at Smith's decision.
And this is the part most people miss... Smith's decision has implications beyond the current season. His five-year exemption into all four majors, earned from his 2022 Open Championship victory, is running out. Furthermore, his chances of a second Olympic appearance are slim if LIV Golf doesn't secure world ranking points. Smith's current ranking is 207, a jump from the 150 places after his second-place finish at the Australian Open.
LIV Golf is actively working to gain Official World Golf Rankings, with the move to four-round, 72-hole tournaments this year being a key factor. Herbert acknowledged the challenges in securing these points, emphasizing their importance for major qualifications and integration into the broader golf ecosystem.
