The very foundation of winter sports is at risk, and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is considering a radical shift to save future Winter Games! The rising threat of climate change is forcing a re-evaluation of when these exhilarating events can even take place.
Traditionally, the Winter Olympics have been a February affair, with every medal since the 1964 Innsbruck Games being awarded in that month. However, the IOC is now openly discussing the possibility of moving future Winter Games as early as January and the Paralympic Winter Games to February. Why the urgency? Simply put, warmer temperatures are making it harder to guarantee snow and ice for competitions.
But here's where it gets controversial... Shifting to January could throw a wrench into the schedules of beloved World Cup races and other established winter sports events. Imagine the clash! It could also directly compete with the already packed calendars of the NFL and NBA, potentially diluting viewership and fan engagement.
This significant review is happening during the first year of Kirsty Coventry's presidency, as the IOC embarks on a comprehensive evaluation of its Games program, aptly named "Fit For The Future." Karl Stoss, an IOC member overseeing the sports program review, candidly shared, "Maybe we are also discussing to bring the Winter Olympics a little bit earlier. To do it in January because it has an implication for the Paralympics as well."
Currently, the Milan Cortina Paralympic Winter Games are slated for March 6-15. Stoss pointed out that March is becoming "very late because the sun is strong enough to melt the snow." This highlights the very real impact of climate change on the sport.
And this is the part most people miss... The IOC has been acknowledging the challenges posed by a changing climate for finding future host cities for quite some time, a point emphasized by Coventry's predecessor, Thomas Bach. The potential shift to January for the Olympics and February for the Paralympics is a direct response to these growing concerns.
Over 100 IOC members are expected to convene again in June to make crucial decisions regarding these Olympic reviews. This includes discussions on whether to introduce new sports and events for the 2030 French Alps Winter Games, which are currently scheduled from February 1-17. Following that, the 2034 Utah Winter Games are planned from February 10-26.
