Orange County School Closure Debate: Enrollment Decline and Community Impact (2026)

Orange County officials are convening today to explore the possibility of shutting down several neighborhood schools in response to a sharp drop in student enrollment. The district is facing a decline large enough to prompt the school board to hold a dedicated work session on school closures. This issue has grown more urgent after a loss of approximately 3,000 students in the current year alone, contributing to a total drop of over 6,000 students across the district.

The district superintendent emphasized that financial constraints make it hard to sustain all campuses. Orange County Public Schools (OCPS) aims to save about $10 million through strategic consolidation, which could involve closing certain schools and merging them with others.

Enrollment has fallen by 8,300 students over the last three years, with more families opting for state-funded vouchers that allow attendance at private or home schools. Some parents are actively campaigning to preserve their local schools, such as Bonneville Elementary on the east side. One mother launched an online petition to rally support for keeping the school open, noting that her child attends there and that she herself studied there as a child.

The potential consolidation plan would affect six elementary schools and one middle school. OCPS indicates that all of these campuses currently operate well below capacity, with several more than half empty.

The school board’s work session is scheduled for this afternoon, starting at 1 p.m. The meeting will be open to the public, but there will be no opportunity for public comment.
